Colored Stones

John is a faceter, diamond setter and colored stone setter. His precisely cut colored stones are what set John's jewelry above others. John started his Gemstone business by designing jewelry to complement his personally faceted stones. He further developed his stone cutting and jewelry making skills through a variety of training courses and workshops including Faceting by Jerry Call, Diamond Setting by Robert Wooding, Gold Smithing by Danny Barnes, Silver smithing by Alan Jewel & Ruthie Cohen, and Lost Wax Casting by Fred Sias.

The photo above left is a piece of brown zircon from Cambodia.  When I cut the stone it came out very dark as you can see in the photo above right.  I sort of expected it since the corners of the rough stone show the same very dark color. Zircon is a stone that is fairly easy to heat treat in a test tube over an alcohol flame just a few minutes watching for the color to lighten.

I heated the finished stone once and it lighted significantly bringing out the more natural orange brown color as you can see in the photo below left.  Unfortunately the stone was still fairly dark unless the light caught it just right.  So, I heated it a second time as seen in the photo below right of the stone set in 14K yellow gold ring.  The final color is a peach color. See what my client in Oregon had to say (her comment are below the photos below)

I'm so excited to see the ring yesterday and I'm loving it!

It pretty, it turn out perfect for the color of the stone and to the yellow gold.

You did a great job. I will show it to my sister.

My new favorite precious metal is 950 Palladium. It's a Platinum family metal that's great to work at the bench and whiter than white gold. These three rings above are handmade starting with half-round wire stock I made the bands and using flat bezel wire I make the bezel mountings.  I faceted the three colored stones blue zircon from Thailand, pink tourmaline from South Africa, and peridot from China.  Here's what my client had to say: April 2009 "Hi John, I wanted to send you one final note of thanks! I received the rings last week and have enjoyed wearing them tremendously! They are very beautiful and the workmanship was perfect. Thank you so much for working with me to develop something I'll cherish forever!"

A few asymmetric faceted stones - Amethyst and Citrine - custom faceted for a Louisville artisan.

Wow ! This was a beautiful 21mm, 40 carat citrine I just finished cutting for a client, faceted in a six sided hexagon shape with a honeycomb crown.  Definitely a keeper, cut for a client from California.  By the way, this is the cut used for the logo of the United States Faceters Guild.

COLORED GEMS
I am a member of the United States Faceters Guild and cut most of the colored stones used in my jewelry. All of the stones that I cut are for sale either loose or available to be set in jewelry. I also facet for hire and will cut your rough facet grade stones. All my faceted colored stones are for sale directly from me and can be purchased by calling (859) 539-2407 or by email request to JohnWright@GemsByJohn.com

DIAMONDS
Commercially cut diamonds are available in every grade to compliment my personally cut colored stones. I am a stone cutter and I facet all varieties of colored stones-- except -- I do not personally cut or re-cut diamonds. Diamonds are faceted in much the same way and using the same methods as that of their brethren colored stones. However diamond-cutting equipment is just a tab bit more industrial in size. Laps are 12” cast iron and turn at 10 times the revolutions per minute than the 8” laps used to cut colored stones. Mechanical claws hold the diamonds on the dop instead of bonded with glue. I use diamonds to accent my colored stones and purchase diamonds precut from diamond site holders and broker. I also have access to vast inventories of large cut graded diamonds for center stones.

A limited number of my faceted stones are for sale from distributors and can be purchased through the following website.
